This was going to be a What's On My Mind, In 5, but I have too many things to discuss. [Dec. 3rd, 2008|08:22 am]

[music |"Another Lonely Christmas" - Prince]

It's beginning to feel a great deal like Christmas and that makes me happy. I need to start doing some Christmas shopping, possibly today.

My improv show with The Shambles last week went really well and I may be performing in the last one of the semester next week. They are awesome kids and I will miss them.

I emailed my boss at Borders and will be working there for the two weeks I'm home. This is kind of a necessary evil, as I'd rather use that time to hang out with people, but I'm going to need some money.

Hard to believe I'm going to be home in 17 days. This semester went by really quickly, I have to believe the four weeks of almost back to back papers helped in that aspect. It's weird thinking about going back to McDaniel, it feels like I've been away from there for much longer (though I guess I have since I haven't had classes there since May).

Pretty excited about my classes next semester: I'm taking Film Analysis, Scriptwriting, some English Major requirement filling Lit analysis class and Astrobiology (Which is apparently a pretty easy class about theoretical alien life. Lots of movies are watched). I also may be taking a non-credit math class that will get my horrible public school system math skills back in shape in order to take the math equivalency test I have to pass to graduate.

I can't stop thinking about Marina and I'm really worried about how stuff goes when I get back, even though I know I shouldn't be. I can't decide if she doesn't want to get back together or if she's just waiting until she sees me to tell me how she feels. In any case, she's apparently getting me a christmas present, so I guess thats a good sign? I'm mentally preparing myself to be heartbroken, but hopefully being home with family and friends will soften that blow. I know I should probably just forget about her until I get home, but that was pretty much what I did when Alex and I broke up and it just made things worse ultimately.

I found out I have to turn in a revised version of my first English essay as well as write an "essay" comparing Sappho/English poetry for my english class which won't be collected or looked at by my seminar professor. This is frustrating because I thought I really only had to do some reading and study for my Archaeology final. It's certainly not the end of the world and it really isn't that much work, but uggghhhhh. My first English paper was kind of a mess too, but I'm going to just try and knock it out this saturday and change as much as I can without having to go back and do more research. I'm not at all prepared for this Archaeology final, which is silly because all I have to do is answer one essay question in an hour. Next week will be spent studying powerpoints and notes.

Guys, Dinosaur Kingdom is not open during December/January! This means we can't go (though I'd be down for it during spring break/the summer). We have to come up with something else. Something awesome.

Zac Bittner's incredibly entertaining, sprawling epic of a Facebook note is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, if only for the Pat/Zac flamewar.

it's 2 in the afternoon and I still haven't showered, should prolly do that.

Later skaters.

What's On My Mind, In Five. [Nov. 19th, 2008|09:49 am]

[music |Collected Comics podcast]

5.I got into The Shambles, which is University of York's Improv troupe! I'm pretty excited and suprised about it, given that they had a ton of really impressive people auditioning along side me and I'd assumed that my being there for only one semester would've probably hurt my chances. It's a really funny and talented group of people and they seem really excited to have me, so I feel like I've really found my niche here.

4. Still feeling down about ex-girlfriend stuff. Things seem to be at a standstill, it doesn't look terrible, but we don't talk alot and I'm beginning to worry she'll have "moved on" when I come back (I...have experience in this). Ultimately though, theres nothing I can do about it for right now, so I'm trying not to focus on her. Needless to say, things will either go really well or really poorly when we finally do get to see each other when I get home in December.

3. I've gotten B's essentially on my last two papers (well, a B- and a B), which is fantastic, as I was expecting to get atleast C's on them. Now all I have to do is knock out my last paper for English/Irish Lit (due monday) and I will literally have nothing to do but read for class until my Archaeology final.

2.I'm really excited for Dinosaur World with Josh, Sisson and Corey (and presumably others). I'm only going to be home for a few weeks because of Jan term, so I feel like this kind of adventure is needed.

1. Despite the fact that I've spent alot of my time abroad missing home, it really has been a great experience. I feel like I've managed to lose alot of anger that I've had inside me and become less of an asshole. I guess being in a really beautiful city and out of your comfort zone will do that to you.

I haven't updated this in way too long.

I've been in England for almost 4 weeks now and I'm getting into the swing of things. I'm taking two classes (or "modules" as they call them here):

*English and Irish Literature- This is my big, 40 credit class. I have three lectures a week and then a two hour "seminar" that is basically a 12 person sit down talk/lecture with a professor. There are about three lecturers, two of whom are American. The professor for my seminar is kind of crazy and spacey and was by the far the most casually dressed person in the room (t shirt, jeans and tennis shoes). He's like a coherent version of keith richards. The class itself is interesting, if dense. We started by reading Woolf's To The Lighthouse, which I wasn't crazy about and we're now on Yeats' The Tower, which I'm liking.

*Introduction to British Archeology- This is only 10 credits and only two one hour lectures a week. Two people from my study abroad program are in it with me, so we sit together. It's a really interesting class, I feel like I'm learning alot.

Combined, I only have three papers due. Two 2,500 word essays (Lit) and one 1,500 word essay (Archeology). The good news means they're super short. The bad news is the first two are due on friday and monday, respectively, and I have to do alot of reading/research despite how short these papers are. I figure once this week's over, the rest of the semester will be pretty laid back.

My mom flew out to visit me this from friday until today. I took the train up to london and we did touristy things, I have a ton of photos to put up on facebook. Ate some really great food (including maybe the best spaghetti and meatballs I've ever had, strangely enough). Went to the British Museum, Tower of London, Portabello Market and our hotel was right next to The Eye and about half a block from the Houses of Parliament/Big Ben (Which, as I discovered, is not actually the name of the clock, but a bell inside the clock).

Things with Marina are at a pretty comfortable point right now, I feel really good about things.

All in all, things are good. I'm not really looking forward to missing Thanksgiving, but there was some talk amongst the folks in my study abroad group about doing a thanksgiving, so we'll see how that goes. I definitely need to update more.

Up next: Halloween!

Marina and I broke up today.

It pretty much reached critical mass earlier this week and the gist of it is that she doesn't think that we can have a relationship if I'm only physically seeing her once a week and then leaving for England. I've tried all week to show her how much she means to me and how much I love her, but it wasn't enough.

I feel like shit, obviously, but I think the general shittiness I've felt over our possible breakup makes it hurt less, that and the fact that she broke up with me in person and it was atleast somewhat amiable.

I guess the key is to keep myself busy and, fuck, I don't know.

Writer's Block: Romance! [Aug. 19th, 2008|06:33 pm]

What's the most romantic thing you have done for someone?

It's pretty terrible that I can't think of anything wild and crazy romantic that I've done, I tend to be more traditional in that sort of thing. For Valentines day, I got Marina her favorite kind of flowers (Daisies) and her favorite kind of chocolate (dark) and for Christmas, I bought her a sketchbook from one of the art museums on the national mall and drew a little sketch of Jack Skellington in it (Nightmare Before Christmas being one of her favorite movies).

Partypartypartypartypartyparty [Aug. 16th, 2008|01:32 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

My birthday was this week and so was its subsequent party, highlights include:

*Presents! (An authentic Indiana Jones fedora from Marina, Cash from family, an AMC giftcard from John, a Gamera movie from Sisson, desert from Julia Rocha, A batman tee, fedora and some comics from Ross)

*Food! (Had surf and turf with my family on wednesday, as well as chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese brought by Marina and Ice Cream Cake)

*Special Guest Star Ross Avery, who was the life of the party on friday, channeling JFK, telling Zach to follow his dream of being an architect, asking for John's security clearance and generally lurking around.

*Tropic Thunder, easily the funniest movie of the year so far and one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Within the first five minutes this was better than Pineapple Express and I enjoyed Pineapple Express alot.

Sadly, everyone will be going back to school soon and my lonely countdown until I leave will begin.

I have an interview with the Borders in the Mall on monday, which I'm REALLY hoping works out, since I only have...7 or so weeks before I leave for school. I figure my retail experience combined with my english major/writing tutor background will help. Marina works at a Borders express too, so I feel like I can use that to my advantage somehow.

In other news, turning 20 in a few days, which is pretty rad. My grandmother sent me a $100 check, which was extraordinarily generous of her.

Pineapple Express was great, enhanced by the fact that James Franco's wacky drug dealer is like a photocopy of my roommate from school, right down to the fascination with space, conspiracy theories and ability to get cold easily.

The Dark Knight was fantastic and I need to see it again before I feel like I can really talk about and analyze it (It's already claimed the coveted spot of being my favorite comic book movie),so who wants to go? (Sidenote: God damn, that Watchmen trailer was awesome).

Marina came out on wednesday night and all was right in the world. We walked the trail that passes under the highway and goes by the patuxent river (and saw a blue heron right after Marina expressed the desire of seeing one. Truly, this girl is magical). We also watched the office and played with Christopher. The only downside is that, eventually, she had to go home.

Work continues to be low paying, but I really like my coworkers, which almost makes up for making like $120 last week. I need to save up $2000 by the end of the summer and right now, I have $120, thanks to having to pay off overdraw fees from BB&SaTan. However, I did finally get my free sandles! They are amazing and I will wear them everywhere, especially work.

This summer's going by quickly. Well, the portion of the summer before all my friends will be back at school and I'll be in Columbia killing time before I leave is going by quickly. But hey, my birthday's comin' up!

WALL-E is by far the best Pixar movie ever made. It honestly connected with me on an emotional level that I don't think most movies can even come close to. Imma write a more imdepth review on my wordpress blog in like a day or so.

My sister, brother in law and nephew moved in on friday and it's been fine so far.

Works been weak sauce lately, I've been making alittle over minimum wage. I'm working fourth of july, so hopefully that'll mean some $$$.

I managed to get off this weekend, so I'm going up to Baltimore city with Sarah and Amos to visit our good friend Nikoli for belated birthday shennanigans, then up to Westminster to see Marina because it's our six month anniversary (!). There will be dinner/romance carrying over until sunday. So good times

Previously, on MAX:

*Zach's surprise party was fun, despite the fact that Zach and I managed to be like two hours late. There was cake, surprise guests, tiny explosions, lARPing, and...pickle surprises.

*Workin' at Clark's has been great. Now that Corey and Roksana are working there, half of the workforce is Hammond Alumni! This all a part of master plan to take over Clark's.

*It sure is rainin' alot!

*I visited my Dad yesterday, which was alright. He's gotten really skinny because of being in the hospital and apparently chemo starts soon, so...fun times. He seems optimistic, though and his specific type of cancer (germ cell) has a high success rate, so that's cool.

*I think a steady regiment of working and helping my mom move really heavy things is getting me into better shape, much like last summer.

*I'm making slow, but steady progress on cleaning up my room. About a third of my desk has been made usable and I'm down to only one box of my school stuff. This in turn has given me some things to put up on ebay to make more room.

That's pretty much it.

On the next episode of MAX...

I get to see Marina on wednesday! Words can't convey my excitement.

Kingdom of The Crystal Skull is far and away the best movie of the summer and I don't think that's going to change, even after Dark Knight comes out. Fantastic movie, it was like pure Spielberg geek happiness. I still want to see Speed Racer, no idea when that's going to happen.

Current summer blockbusters seen: (3) Iron Man, Narnia, Indiana Jones.

I'm home now, have a bunch of leads on jobs and I'll know by this morning if I'm working at Clark's in the mall. I really need to clean my room/unpack, but one usually cancels out my ability to do the other.

The trip to Hammond was equal parts nice and awkward. I'm really enjoying hanging out with everyone, despite the constant bickering and me missing Marina terribly. Hopefully I'll get up to Westminster to see her soon.

My dad's doing better, he seems to be recovering well and I'm less worried about him, which feels nice. And a milestone was reached in the Mom/Guy vs. Max conflict, also great.

I've started burning through cash pretty quickly, which I need to stop. I've spent like $60 since I've been home, so I need to chill on that until I start working. I'm fine on money and I'm getting another paycheck, but I don't want to end up like winter break where I was poor ass broke all month because I kept counting on paychecks.

Still, this summer's off to a good start.

I wanna update this because I haven't really written a post in a while. Crappy poems and crappy questionnaires don't count.

I still don't have a computer, mostly because I haven't gotten around to buying a new hard drive. The abundance of computers on campus and my ipod are still working out fine.

I'm probably going to work at Harris Teeter over the summer. Which will probably be like Target, but less evil and walking distance. Workin' full time too, probably. I'm gonna need living money for England, speaking of which

I'm goin' to england for schoolin' next semester. University of York, to be precise. I'm only signed up for two classes so far, but one's an English/Irish lit class and the other is British Archeology(!). I'm hoping they offer a class on dry wit or something. Or occulemency.

I need to get my driver's license. I'm going to try and get that this summer.

Yesterday, Marina and I went on a picnic at this national park up in Hanover,PA. We then hiked and saw many scenic things like fish (alive and dead), tombstones in german, and baby geese. This was followed by a viewing of Forgetting Sarah Marshall(hilarious).

I'm gonna be home may 2nd/3rd. People not unlike my friends and a person like myself should do somethin'.

Previously, on MAX:

*This year's Valentine's day was easily the best one I've ever had. The girl and I went out to dinner and then watched the copy of Knocked Up she bought me. I did the traditional "flowers and chocolate", but threw in a poem for good measure. I was pretty pleased with myself.

*Marina and I went to see Seven Samurai at the Carroll County Arts center on friday and I loved it so much that I've borrowed Throne of Blood, Yojimbo and Rashomon in order to get the proper Kurasawa experience.

*Saturday, I had to get up at 8 to go with my Sci Fi in Film class to some kind of Sci Fi convention. Normally, you'd figure this thing would be up my alley, but the lack of comics and the fact that our professor made us stay for like EIGHT HOURS pretty much killed the enthusiasm. Still, I walked away with some comics and got to go to a Chipotle.

*With spring break approaching, I seem to be the only person with no plans. I'm pretty sure everyone's break is different from mine, which spans from 14th of march to the 23rd. Am I correct in this assumption?

*The first Indiana Jones trailer has me cautiously optimistic. Along with Iron Man, Dark Knight, and Star Trek (I think that comes out this summer?), this is going to be a good summer for movies.

My Life In Five [Jan. 6th, 2008|07:46 pm]

[music |Anyone Else But You - Michael Cera and Ellen Page]

1.John and I went up to McDaniel this weekend, which was a ton of fun. Got to spend time with Nikolai, Sarah, Claire and, of course, Marina. There was much amusement, story telling, game playing and Superbad watching. We went out to eat at O'Lourdens, which is this Irish pub/restaurant that I had a gift card to.

2. Rachel is being super-distant lately and I'm unsure why. She's moody and, well, Rachel, so I can only guess why. Given her nature, it'll swing around to normal soon enough.

3. I have an amazing girlfriend. Marina burned me two CDs and got me the Juno soundtrack. She also got me a rock, which is probably the most romantic gesture I've ever recieved. I'm too tired to explain why, but it is.

4. I'm working one day this week, which is great for my free time, though not so much for my wallet. Until thursday, I've got like two dollars to my name.

5. I'm honestly in the best mental/emotional shape I've been in ...ever? This upcoming semester is going to be great.
