[Aug. 16th, 2008|01:32 pm] |
My birthday was this week and so was its subsequent party, highlights include:
*Presents! (An authentic Indiana Jones fedora from Marina, Cash from family, an AMC giftcard from John, a Gamera movie from Sisson, desert from Julia Rocha, A batman tee, fedora and some comics from Ross)
*Food! (Had surf and turf with my family on wednesday, as well as chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese brought by Marina and Ice Cream Cake)
*Special Guest Star Ross Avery, who was the life of the party on friday, channeling JFK, telling Zach to follow his dream of being an architect, asking for John's security clearance and generally lurking around.
*Tropic Thunder, easily the funniest movie of the year so far and one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Within the first five minutes this was better than Pineapple Express and I enjoyed Pineapple Express alot.
Sadly, everyone will be going back to school soon and my lonely countdown until I leave will begin. |

| Writer's Block: A Posthumous Oscar for Joker? |
[Aug. 12th, 2008|04:20 pm] |
I would definitely say he deserves to win for Best Supporting Actor (which is what I assume he'd be nominated for? He had a ton of screentime, but Bale was the lead ultimately). It's an incredibly well crafted performance and Ledger's take on the Joker is, for my money, the best incarnation of the character and will go down as one of the greatest movie villians of all time.
But then again, maybe Daniel Day-Lewis will get jealous and blow us all away by playing a talking bear. Oscars are too far away to really tell how it'll go. |

The Dark Knight was fantastic and I need to see it again before I feel like I can really talk about and analyze it (It's already claimed the coveted spot of being my favorite comic book movie),so who wants to go? (Sidenote: God damn, that Watchmen trailer was awesome).
Marina came out on wednesday night and all was right in the world. We walked the trail that passes under the highway and goes by the patuxent river (and saw a blue heron right after Marina expressed the desire of seeing one. Truly, this girl is magical). We also watched the office and played with Christopher. The only downside is that, eventually, she had to go home.
Work continues to be low paying, but I really like my coworkers, which almost makes up for making like $120 last week. I need to save up $2000 by the end of the summer and right now, I have $120, thanks to having to pay off overdraw fees from BB&SaTan. However, I did finally get my free sandles! They are amazing and I will wear them everywhere, especially work.
This summer's going by quickly. Well, the portion of the summer before all my friends will be back at school and I'll be in Columbia killing time before I leave is going by quickly. But hey, my birthday's comin' up! |

WALL-E is by far the best Pixar movie ever made. It honestly connected with me on an emotional level that I don't think most movies can even come close to. Imma write a more imdepth review on my wordpress blog in like a day or so.
My sister, brother in law and nephew moved in on friday and it's been fine so far.
Works been weak sauce lately, I've been making alittle over minimum wage. I'm working fourth of july, so hopefully that'll mean some $$$.
I managed to get off this weekend, so I'm going up to Baltimore city with Sarah and Amos to visit our good friend Nikoli for belated birthday shennanigans, then up to Westminster to see Marina because it's our six month anniversary (!). There will be dinner/romance carrying over until sunday. So good times |

I wanna update this because I haven't really written a post in a while. Crappy poems and crappy questionnaires don't count.
I still don't have a computer, mostly because I haven't gotten around to buying a new hard drive. The abundance of computers on campus and my ipod are still working out fine.
I'm probably going to work at Harris Teeter over the summer. Which will probably be like Target, but less evil and walking distance. Workin' full time too, probably. I'm gonna need living money for England, speaking of which
I'm goin' to england for schoolin' next semester. University of York, to be precise. I'm only signed up for two classes so far, but one's an English/Irish lit class and the other is British Archeology(!). I'm hoping they offer a class on dry wit or something. Or occulemency.
I need to get my driver's license. I'm going to try and get that this summer.
Yesterday, Marina and I went on a picnic at this national park up in Hanover,PA. We then hiked and saw many scenic things like fish (alive and dead), tombstones in german, and baby geese. This was followed by a viewing of Forgetting Sarah Marshall(hilarious).
I'm gonna be home may 2nd/3rd. People not unlike my friends and a person like myself should do somethin'. |

My laptop is dead. Long live my laptop.
I took it to IT on tuesday, it crapped out on me monday night after about of a month of taking an insane amount of time to start up whenever I turned it on. The IT people told me I needed to get recovery disks, which means I'm going to have to order them some point soon if I want to (maybe) have a computer over the break. The upside to this seems to be that I'm do much more recreational reading than usual. Richard Matheson is the most underrated writer ever.
I'm actually in a pretty decent mood lately, more nervous than anything. I'm waiting to hear back from study abroad stuff/washingtonian internship stuff. I'm just assuming I'm not getting the washingtonian one as not to get my hopes up. The National Archives have a few and they don't have an actual deadline for turning stuff in.
I've exposed both Marina and my friend Sarah to Arrested Development and it seems to have been taken. More members for the church.
Cocktales, aka the male equivalent of the vagina monologues, is next week and I'm pretty excited to be a part of it again.
Anyone want to see Be Kind Rewind over the break? |

Previously, on MAX:
*This year's Valentine's day was easily the best one I've ever had. The girl and I went out to dinner and then watched the copy of Knocked Up she bought me. I did the traditional "flowers and chocolate", but threw in a poem for good measure. I was pretty pleased with myself.
*Marina and I went to see Seven Samurai at the Carroll County Arts center on friday and I loved it so much that I've borrowed Throne of Blood, Yojimbo and Rashomon in order to get the proper Kurasawa experience.
*Saturday, I had to get up at 8 to go with my Sci Fi in Film class to some kind of Sci Fi convention. Normally, you'd figure this thing would be up my alley, but the lack of comics and the fact that our professor made us stay for like EIGHT HOURS pretty much killed the enthusiasm. Still, I walked away with some comics and got to go to a Chipotle.
*With spring break approaching, I seem to be the only person with no plans. I'm pretty sure everyone's break is different from mine, which spans from 14th of march to the 23rd. Am I correct in this assumption?
*The first Indiana Jones trailer has me cautiously optimistic. Along with Iron Man, Dark Knight, and Star Trek (I think that comes out this summer?), this is going to be a good summer for movies. |

Man, Juno was probably the best movie I've seen all year.
In other news, my ipod appears to have died, which is irritating. Because I have to take it in and get it either fixed or replaced and I'd rather not have to go through and add all the songs I put on it again. I'll be in the area of an apple store tomorrow when I'm in DC, so I guess it's not that big a deal. |

| Yesterday and Today |
[Dec. 23rd, 2007|05:12 pm] |
What'd I do? Saw Walk Hard and went to my first day of work. Then saw Avenue Q. Walk Hard was very funny and it was a pitch perfect parody of biopics. Avenue Q was hilarious and actually had alot of heart. Max ate twizzlers.
Godiva was alright, very exhausting. My coworkers seem pretty cool. Someone walking by asked me how the name of the store was pronounced. I should've told them Go-dee-va.

| The Road to Christmas. |
[Dec. 19th, 2007|12:42 am] |
Addendum to my Christmas movie list: Die Hard gets bumped down the list by The Nightmare Before Christmas and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Chevy Chase was such a genius).
I found of my final grades today: Latin: C (Totally acceptable, I'm just amazed I didn't get a D) Chaucer: B+ (It's a 300 level class with a ton of old old reading, I'm fine with this) Theatre of The Western World: B+ (Considering how I rarely did the reading or studied, this is more or less what I expected. The plus is icing) Horror Fiction: A! (Really relieved, since it would've hurt my GPA to get a B.)
GPA: 3.1
This will be good for when I apply to study in #######. I need to fill that out...soon.
////////////////////////////////////////
FLASH FACT:I realized today that I've spent the last three days at the mall!
Madness.
The good news is all my Godiva paper work is filed, so I can start working on Saturday. I'm alittle nervous about working at a job that, you know, requires me to actually work. The good news is that I noticed theres atleast one guy there who's completely incompetant, so I'll look good by comparison (I call this "The Target Theory"). Plus, I work with Shellie once more, so that's fun. Presumably there will be a chocolate for ice cream arms deal between Moo and Godiva.
Also, I've gotten all but one piece of my christmas shopping done (atleast of the shopping I need to do before the 25th). |

Thanksgiving and it's break were good times, I got to spend time with my friends, many of whom I had not seen since I'd gone back to school. Everyone grew beards, it's freaky.
Even Elana.
I saw four movies over the break, which is some kind of record for me: *The Mist (As a fan of the short story, I thought it was a really solid adaptation and I give them props for choosing such a complex and not at all "hollywood" ending)
*Enchanted (Just a fun little movie with very good music and little homages to classic Disney canon. Also, Amy Adams is hot.)
*Beowulf (Not perfect by any means, but the visual effects were at times really phenomenal and I liked the way they sort of treat Beowulf as this burnt out rock star who is tired of the fame he hasn't truly earned)
*No Country for Old Men (Probably the best movie of the year, as it stands. Definitely the best thing the Cohen bros. have made since O Brother Where Art Thou. Really, really fascinating movie. It makes me want to start reading The Road, which is also by Cormac Macarthy.
Yesterday, my roommate and I met Nick Gurewitch, the creator of The Perry Bible Fellowship, at a Atomic POP up in Baltimore. He's a supernice guy, he drew a very nice sketch for me about the dangers of drug abuse (and skub).
What remains? Two large papers, one of which is entirely in Middle-English. This shall be a busy weekend for writing.
Then, who knows? Probably Christmas! |

| Five Things Upon Which My Mind Doth Focus. |
[Nov. 6th, 2007|11:07 am] |
*I have a cold. Bleh. I'm fighting it with the power of cup noodles, Tylenol Cold, and tea. Because of this, I've gone to like one class in the last two days. Luckily, I haven't missed much.
*The WGA strike is on. I sympathize with the writers, because they really do get treated like shit in Hollywood, but I hope this is resolved soon. I like my tv very much.
*My hair is getting shagg-ay.
*I really, really want to see American Gangster. And I'm Not There. I'm going to make sure this happens over the break. which leads me to...
*I really can't wait for Thanksgiving break. The combination of food, lazer tag and other assorted things are greatly needed. |

Zach and I saw Eastern Promises and Shoot 'em Up tonight at Muvico.
/In short/
Eastern Promises: Decent movie, Viggo Mortenson is always good.
Shoot 'Em Up: Many, many bad guys are killed with guns, knives and carrots for an hour and twenty minutes. Often during intercourse or in mid-air. Also, it has some of the best purposely corny dialogue of any movie ever.
So yeah, I love this movie. I love this movie HARD.
Interesting note: Both films were costumed by David Cronenberg's wife. |

My roommate, who is insane, has three different alarm clocks. They're always in use. Like, to look at his window/dresser, you'd think it was a crappy museum exhibit on the history of the alarm clock. He's got his cell phone, an 80's "best western" digital one and a completely cartoony "classic" one, the kind that you expect Bugs Bunny to be hitting with a hammer.
Remember how I said they're always in use?
Yeah, because they go off RANDOMLY thoughout the day.
I don't know if he just doesn't know how to fix it or if like...he plans on getting up at a certain time and just doesn't or what, but his digital alarm will go off like every 45 minutes from 8:00 to like...noon. His cell phone, which plays "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye, will go off when he actually wants to get up, though he never actuallys gets up when it goes off, waiting until it goes off like three times.
The old, turn key alarm?
That's the scariest of them all.
It goes off at the most random times, proceeding to scare the crap out of me every. single. time.
You'd think, from this post, that I was angry about this. I was. But I've actually begun to get used to it. It's like living in a room with birds or something.
I still want to hit the turn key one with a big mallet though.
By the way, in the time it's taken me to write this much, two of his alarms have gone off.
.....
I'm still sick, but now it's basically just congestion.
I really want to see a movie this weekend. The last thing I saw theatrically was 3:10 to Yuma, which was good, but I need another hit.
I'm so tired of people who, after discovering I like The Beatles, ask me if I'm as excited as they are about Across The Universe. Because, well, I'm not.
I love The Beatles, they're,without question, my favorite band of all time. But there is no way I will pay a minimum of $7 to go see a horrible plot with what look like the most uninteresting characters that just happens to have like 30 Beatles covers in it. I'll borrow the soundtrack or catch it on HBO so that I atleast have the option of turning it off and reading Thor or something.
The Office premiere cannot come soon enough. |

| Things that make me smile right now: |
[Sep. 17th, 2007|10:16 am] |
*The cold snap, if only because it's allowed me to rediscover how fiendishly comfortable my old brown jacket is. It also means that the leaves are going to change soon and, well, I'm a pretty big fan of that.
*I've seen two praying mantises (mantisi?) within the last two weeks. Two! I've seen maybe 5 praying mantises like...ever. And they were big ones, no less.
*Working in the writing center. I'm sure I won't be feeling that way come midterms, but this is like the best freaking job I've ever had. I had like two people come in and get help on their papers last night, the rest of the time I looked up obscure comic book characters on wikipedia and studied for Latin.
*Marvel Visionaries: Jack Kirby volume 2. I already loved Jack Kirby, but seeing old romance and western comics, in addition to the superhero and monster stuff he's famous for, makes me appreciate how really virsitle an artist he is. Also, it totally illustrates how completely essential Stan Lee is to their collaborations. Kirby can't write dialogue to save his life.
*Russell Crowe. I just watched A Good Year with Rachel and, man, that movie ended up being so much better than it could've been. 3:10 to Yuma was pretty excellent aswell. Looking forward to American Gangster, which feels like it's going to be this years "The Departed".
*Cute freshman girls who love old movies/think I'm cute. Seriously. This girl I was hanging out with brought up American Splendor and we both realized we'd never really talked about that movie with anyone else.
*My friend Claire coming to visit tomorrow. She's leaving for England on the 20th, so this is the last time I'll get the see her before next semester. |

| Crazy Dogggz: a weekend in review |
[Sep. 9th, 2007|08:37 pm] |
Friday: Had class, including a particularly soul crushing Latin quiz. This however was immediately followed by my good friend Rachel Lopez driving down to columbia with myself and Rachel Diamond. After dropping her off, Rachel and I begin preparing enchiladas for the evening. Soon after, John showed up and the three of us went to the mall and target, culminating in the purchase of enchilada ingrediants and a cameo from Target Girl.
Following this was dinner and some Flight of The Conchords (hence, title). Around 10, we decided to head up to college park so John could get some things he needed since he was spending the night in my basement. I got to see a large part of College park that I'd never seen, which was cool. Zach soon joined us and we went to Plato's diner, a restaurant that has constant water refills.
The next morning, Rachel left and John and I picked up Danny and headed into Baltimore. The show's really grown alot, which is good and bad. It's good because it meant a wider range of guests and whatnot, though I feel like the show is starting to lose the laid-back-ness that I've always loved. Notable things I aquired: *sketches from Mike "Hellboy" Mingola, Scott "PvP" Kurtz, Eric Powell and a few others.
*A big honkin' book of Jack Kirby's Marvel work
*A Turtle t shirt, featuring Turtle from Turtle vs. Bunny.
*Many, many comic books. God bless the 50 cent comic bins and their treasure.
Meeting Mike Mingola had been something of a dream of mine for many years because he's my favorite comic book artist and he seemed like a cool guy.
The evening was ended with Josh and myself seeing the Brothers Solomon. As a movie, it had some problems, but it was still hilarious.
Today, I saw 3:10 to Yuma with my dad and enjoyed it. Ben Foster is crazy good actor. Emphasis on the crazy. Currently, I'm sitting in The Writing Center, typing this because I have no work to be tutoring.
Good times. |
